These are sets of children's books to help practitioners guide children aged 0-12 in their thinking about equality, diversity and self-expression.
Very early in their lives, children are assigned distinctive social roles related to being a boy or a girl, being of one cultural origin or another, coming from a heterosexual family or not, meeting beauty standards or not. Certain behaviours, often transmitted or adopted unconsciously, are the expression of discrimination and inequality.
Classified by age category but also by theme, the books in the Kaleidoscope selection address subjects of social interest such as cultural diversity, family diversity, the right to education, homosexuality, body image and immigration. The books on offer will help children to avoid preconceived ideas and simplistic roles that may be associated with them, and will encourage reflection, the development of critical thinking, openness and tolerance. They will be an excellent starting point for dialogue with children, while providing them with appropriate vocabulary to express themselves.
The Kaleidoscope selection is available in most municipal libraries and bookstores in Quebec.
We hope you enjoy your discoveries and readings that will bring pleasure, wonder and reflection to the children around you!
